What is Bioheat?
Bioheat is a heating oil blend containing Biodiesel, a renewable fuel. It helps heating oil burn cleaner, making it better for the
environment and home heating systems. The fuel is heating oil mixed with Biodiesel fuel to create "Bioheat". Biodiesel is
made from soybean oil and processed from other fats and vegetable oils.
Bioheat is not a replacement for heating oil. Bioheat is a product that makes today's heating oil better. Both laboratory testing
and in-home field results have demonstrated that a five percent blend of biodiesel to heating oil creates the ideal "Bioheat"
product
for today's marketplace.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BIOHEAT?
- Bioheat helps heating oil burn cleaner within a boiler or furnace. This is better for the environment and can also help maintain cleaner heat exchangers.
- Biodiesel is a natural, renewable resource.
- Since Biodiesel is grown and produced domestically, Bioheat can do it's part to alleviate supply constraints on
the distillate pool.
- Biodiesel is a widespread and uniformally accepted fuel throughout the nation. Hundreds of major fleets use
Biodiesel, such as all four branches of the military, dozens of school districts, and the National Park Service.
- Bioheat can be delivered to customer storage tanks in the usual manner.
WHY IS FIVE PERCENT BIODIESEL THE RECOMMENDED BLEND RATIO?
Biodiesel will, over time, help clean out sludge residue in heating oil systems. It is advisable to use low blends to prevent
such residue from plugging strainers and nozzles. Biodiesel prices will vary with market conditions, so the 5% blend
ratio provides an attractive economic tolerance for fuel oil customers
ONCE BLENDED TO CREATE BIOHEAT, WILL THE BIODIESEL PORTION REMAIN BLENDED WITH THE HEATING OIL?
Bioheat mixes completely into solution with heating oil. Once blended, it does not come out of solution and will not separate
even in the presence of water.
WHAT HAVE STUDIES SHOWN ABOUT BIOHEAT?
Industry tests demonstrate that Bioheat is seamless and transparent to the heating oil network and can function satisfactorily
in home and commercial heating systems with no adverse operational characteristics with blend levels not exceeding 20%.
Several key observations and findings:
- Nitrogen Oxide emissions are frequently reduced by 20 percent
- Sulfur Oxide emissions are lowered significantly (83 percent in some cases)
- Smoke numbers are lower with Bioheat
- Fuel lubricity sharply enhanced
- The odor of middle distillates is reduced
